I recommend this book because, Drive, by Larry Bird, can be a very inspirational book to young athletes that have just started and need that inspiration. It shows no matter how late you start playing a sport, you can always end up in the big leagues. Also this book tells us about Larry’s life and the struggles he faced leading up to his NBA career. The book talks about his days in high school leading all the way to his current season, 1989-1990 with the Boston Celtics. The book talks about Larry’s highs and lows, his marriages, divorces, wins, and losses. I like how this story was about basketball and the struggles Larry had to overcome. Overall, I would recommend this book, because it talks about the true meaning of determination and how Larry never gave up.
Larry Bird had a huge rivalry with Magic Johnson and the Lakers, starting from his college days. His college team made it to the NCAA championship and he played Magic Johnson but lost. At that point, he knew that he would have to face this man for many years to come. Although he lost to Magic many times, Larry finally got his chance to beat Magic in the 1984 finals, although that would be the only time. In Larry and Magic’s career, they would face each other 4 times in championship series and Larry only won once.
Finally I would recommend this book because, it shows true determination. Although it seemed Bird could never truly get over the hump of Magic Johnson, he never gave up and never stopped trying. Bird played through injuries, illnesses, and disregarded any drama that occurs off the courts. Bird stayed away from drugs and lived a clean life. The entire career of Bird can be described as the underdog story, which is what makes this book so good. For those of you who aren’t into sports, I would not recommend because it is all about sports. Also, it is pretty tough from Larry Bird’s perspective. Although this is a afterword by Magic Johnson, the bulk of the book is written and told from Bird’s perspective. In case someone didn’t know, Larry Bird is one of the greatest players to have ever played in the NBA and played for the Boston Celtics his whole successful career.
